What To Do When You First Set Up Wordpress Blog

One of the first things that you should when you first set up your wordpress blog is to configure its permalinks!  So what are permalinks exactly? Permalinks is short for permanent links. It is basically the url of your post. This is important as it’s these links that will be indexed by the search engine. When your post gets indexed, you definitely want it to be as optimised as possible for seo. The easiest way to do this is to change your permalinks from looking like these which are ugly and don’t tell much about your post:

http://example.com/?p=N

to the much nicer and seo friendly

http://example.com/category/post-name/
or http://example.com/year/month/day/post-name

To do this, you need to go to “settings” as shown below:
permalinks

Click on the permalinks link, and you will get this on your screen:
permalink-structure

Choose whichever structure that suits you. Whatever it is, make sure that the url contains the name of your post i.e. “sample post” or %postname% in the url. Some of us like to put %category%/%postname%/ , my comment is yup definitely you can do the same but, you will be lacking flexibility to change your category’s name or structure later on as everything would have been indexed by the search engine. Any change to this will result in the search engine returning an error message.

But remember, you should only do this if after you have changed the write access of your .htaccess file which is located in the very top or at the root of your domain folder. Normally it is kept under /public_html/ folder. Found it? Change the write access to “777″. This can be done direct from your cpanel or if you are using something like SmartFTP, you can just click on the file and look for properties/CHMOD.

Next step is to activate your akismet plugin. This is to prevent any spamming on your blog. It is neatly situated in your plugins folder. Click Plugins ->Installed in your left sidebar. Get API key from http://www.wordpress.org if you have not had one.

Other useful plugins that you can install on your blog are:

  1. Google Analytics wordpress plugin - To professionally track the statistics of your blog i.e. where the traffic to your blog comes from, what are the keywords most searched and linked to your blog, the geo location of your visitors.
  2. Maxblogpress Affiliate Ninja - This is the best and most flexible affiliate plugin yet ever created. This is a must have if you want to be successful in the world of affiliate blogging.
